Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia hasĀ hailed the Malawi Water and Sanitation Project Phase 1 (MWSP-1) as a crucial step towards achieving universal access to clean water by 2030.
Speaking during a recent visit to project sites, Mia highlighted the project’s benefits, including increased access to water for low-income communities.

On his part,Blantyre City Mayor Joseph Makwinja welcomed the project, citing its potential to reduce waterborne diseases like cholera.
Blantyre Water Board (BWB) chairperson Joe Chingāani confirmed the project’s progress, noting it is a five-year initiative implemented jointly with Blantyre City Council(BCC).
He said project also aims to improve sanitation facilities, waste management, and water distribution networks.
Key project components include constructing an engineered landfill, improving the water distribution network, and rehabilitating the Soche Waste Water treatment plant.
It is being funded by the World Bank.
