By Jones Gadama

Neno District Council has emerged as the top-performing local authority in the 2024 Local Authority Performance Assessment (LAPA) awards, scoring an impressive 93%.

Dowa and Nkhotakota district councils followed closely, tying for second place with scores of 92%.

Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, presented the awards in Salima, praising the councils for demonstrating significant improvements in governance and financial accountability.

“All 28 district councils have qualified for Performance-Based Grants, reflecting a positive shift in resource management,” he said.

The LAPA assessment evaluates local authorities’ performance in areas such as development planning, procurement, financial management, and health service delivery.

The awards aim to promote good governance and accountability in local councils.

The recognition is expected to motivate councils to continue enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in resource utilization, ultimately improving the lives of Malawians.

With all 28 district councils qualifying for Performance-Based Grants, the future looks promising for local governance in Malawi.
