Flames coach sees silver lining in independence day defeat

By Jones Gadama

Malawi’s national football team coach, Kalisto Pasuwa, has expressed optimism despite his side’s defeat to Botswana in a penalty shootout at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The match, which was part of the country’s 61st Independence Day celebrations, ended 1-1 in normal time but the Flames lost 3-1 on penalties.

Pasuwa, who has been at the helm of the team since 2024, believes that his side drew valuable lessons from the encounter. “We have drawn so many positive lessons today,” Pasuwa said, highlighting the team’s resilience and determination.

Flames Vs Botswana

Despite the loss, Pasuwa’s comments suggest that he is focused on building on the team’s strengths and addressing areas of improvement.

The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities.

However, it was Botswana who managed to capitalize on their chances, converting their penalties with ease while Malawi’s players struggled to find the back of the net from the spot.

As the Flames continue to prepare for upcoming matches, Pasuwa’s positivity in the face of defeat is likely to be a morale booster for the team. With the coach’s experience and expertise, Malawi fans can expect the team to bounce back stronger in their next outing.

Pasuwa’s appointment as the Malawi national team’s coach has been widely covered, with many expecting big things from the Zimbabwean tactician.

Having previously coached teams like Dynamos FC and Big Bullets FC, Pasuwa brings a wealth of experience to the Flames.

His ability to lead teams to victory in high-pressure situations will be crucial in Malawi’s future matches.

The Flames’ next challenge will be a crucial test of their mettle, but with Pasuwa at the helm, fans are optimistic about the team’s prospects.

As Malawi continues to celebrate its independence, the football team will look to make the nation proud with their performances on the pitch.
