Region 5 Success Opens European Door for Malawi’s Rising Stars

By Rahim Abdul

The impact of Malawi’s participation at the recent Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia continues to bear fruit, with three promising young footballers now on the verge of securing life-changing opportunities in Europe.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets duo Madalitso Safuli and Misheck Billiati, alongside Ekhaya Reserve midfielder Yusuf Namtunga, are reportedly set to travel to Portugal next month for trials with European clubs after impressing scouts during the regional tournament in Windhoek.

The trio caught the attention of talent spotters while representing the Malawi Under-20 National Team, showcasing their abilities against some of Southern Africa’s finest young players. Their performances are now being viewed as proof that Malawian football possesses the quality to compete on a bigger stage.

Sources familiar with the arrangements say the players are expected to depart on July 2 after their visas were successfully processed. The first stop is expected to be Vila Verde FC in Braga, Portugal, before moving on to Spain for additional assessments with another club whose identity remains undisclosed.

The development highlights the growing importance of youth tournaments as pathways to professional football, with scouts increasingly turning their attention to regional competitions in search of emerging talent.

For Safuli and Billiati, the opportunity comes after steadily breaking into the FCB Nyasa Big Bullets senior squad this season. Their exposure at both club and international level appears to have accelerated interest from overseas recruiters.

Meanwhile, Namtunga’s inclusion in the group underlines the depth of talent emerging from Malawi’s lower divisions, proving that opportunities can arise regardless of a player’s current club status.

While excitement continues to build around the potential move, sources close to Bullets indicate that the club has not yet received formal communication from the interested parties or the players’ representatives regarding the proposed trials.

However, there is optimism that any official request would be welcomed, with the club understood to be supportive of opportunities that could advance the careers of its young players.

Should the trials prove successful, the three youngsters could become the latest products of Malawi’s youth football system to take their first steps toward the European game, transforming a strong showing at the Region 5 Games into a gateway to the international stage.
