The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services(DICS) on Wednesday received two state-of-the-art travel document examination kits from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) which are designed to detect fraudulent travel documents, altered visas, and manipulated biometric or biographic data.

The kits will be deployed at major border posts to bolster efforts in curbing irregular migration.

Speaking during the handover ceremony at IOM offices in Lilongwe, IOM Chief of Mission to Malawi, Nomagugu Ncube, emphasized the organization’s continued commitment to supporting Malawi in strengthening migration management systems.

“We are pleased to present these travel document examination kits.In addition to the equipment, we will be providing comprehensive training to ensure officers are well-prepared to use them effectively,” said Ncube .

On his part, acting Director General of the Department of Immigration, Macloid Anamchuma Kalindang’oma, expressed gratitude to IOM, describing the organization as a dependable partner.

He said the department is now steadily advancing in the use of modern technology.

“Acquiring sophisticated equipment such as this marks a significant step forward in our technological capabilities.

“Let us utilize these tools effectively—they will serve as catalysts for strengthening national security and fostering socio-economic growth,” he said.

The donation adds to a series of IOM-backed initiatives, including the rollout of the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS) at 16 border posts—currently operational in Dedza, Mchinji, and Kamuzu International Airport(KIA) as well as the Border Residence Card System(BRCS).

IOM is also supporting the department in launching a Marine Border Project in Nkhata Bay this August.
