US President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, starting from May 9 to May 11, in a bid to bring temporary peace to the conflict-ridden region.
The ceasefire, announced on Trump’s Truth Social platform, is set to coincide with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

This move is seen as a significant step towards de-escalating the conflict, with both Russia and Ukraine agreeing to suspend kinetic activity and exchange 1,000 prisoners from each country.
Trump expressed hope that the ceasefire marks the “beginning of the end” of the war, stating that talks are ongoing to end the major conflict, the biggest since World War II.
The announcement has been welcomed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who thanked Trump for his diplomatic efforts and urged Russia to fulfill its commitments.
The ceasefire is expected to bring relief to civilians caught in the crossfire, with many having endured months of intense fighting and displacement.
However, past ceasefires have been marred by violations, and it remains to be seen whether this latest agreement will hold.
The international community has been watching the situation closely, with leaders urging restraint and diplomacy to resolve the conflict.
As the world waits to see if this ceasefire will bring lasting peace, one thing is clear: the people of Ukraine and Russia deserve a respite from the devastating war.
