The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has assured the public that the Karonga-Chiweta stretch of the M1 Road will remain open and accessible to all road users despite planned demonstrations.
The development comes after the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) announced that it will hold demonstrations on July 1, 2026, including plans to block the Karonga-Chiweta Road to pressure the government into speeding up rehabilitation works on the damaged stretch.
In a statement signed by Service Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Lael Chimfembo, the police said no person or organisation has the authority to block a public road or interfere with the free movement of people, goods and services.
The statement further warned that anyone found attempting to block the road or engage in acts that disrupt public order on or after July 1 will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
MPS has therefore advised motorists, businesses and other members of the public to continue using the Karonga-Chiweta Road without fear or concern, assuring them that the route will remain open.
The police said they will continue carrying out their constitutional duty of maintaining law and order while ensuring that public safety is not compromised during the planned demonstrations.
The Malawi Police Service has also reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public safety, protecting the rights of all citizens and maintaining peace and order across the country.
