FIFA President Infantino Vows 2026 World Cup opening will be “The Greatest Show on Earth”

By Burnett Munthali

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has promised that the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the most spectacular in the tournament’s history.

Speaking ahead of the first World Cup to be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Infantino said preparations are underway to deliver a global spectacle unlike any seen before.

He described the event as “the greatest show on earth,” underscoring FIFA’s ambition to match the scale of the expanded 48-team competition with an equally historic opening.

The 2026 tournament will mark the first time the World Cup is staged across three nations, increasing both logistical complexity and global attention.

Infantino noted that the opening ceremony will not only celebrate football but also showcase the cultural diversity and unity of North America.

FIFA officials are working with entertainment and production partners in all three host countries to coordinate a unified presentation.

The ceremony is expected to blend music, technology, and live performance to reach billions of viewers worldwide.

Infantino emphasized that the World Cup remains football’s premier event, and its opening must reflect that status on the global stage.

He said FIFA is committed to making the 2026 edition a landmark moment for the sport, both on and off the pitch.

The expanded format will see 104 matches played across 16 cities, raising expectations for fan engagement and international broadcast coverage.

Infantino expressed confidence that the opening ceremony will set the tone for a tournament defined by inclusion, innovation, and global participation.

He added that FIFA wants to leave a legacy that goes beyond football, inspiring host cities and future generations.

Preparations for the ceremony are already being integrated with venue planning and fan experience strategies across the three host nations.

The FIFA president concluded that the world should expect a production that captures the scale, energy, and unifying spirit of the modern game.
