Kamuzu Stadium closure costs SULOM billions in projected revenue

By Rahim Abdul

The continued closure of Kamuzu Stadium(KS) in Blantyre has come at a significant financial cost to the Super League of Malawi (SULOM), which says it missed its K2 billion revenue target for the first round of the 2026/27 FDH Bank Premiership season.

SULOM collected K1.083 billion from 120 matches played during the first round, representing a 1.74 percent increase from the K1.064 billion generated during the corresponding period of the previous season.

However, the league governing body says the figures could have been considerably higher if Kamuzu Stadium in had been available to host top-flight matches.

SULOM Director of Finance Allie Mwachande said in an interview with 247 Malawi News that the closure of the stadium has affected the organisation’s revenue prospects, particularly because Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets are unable to play their home matches at the facility.

Mwachande said Kamuzu Stadium remains an important venue for the two Blantyre-based giants, whose matches traditionally attract large crowds and generate substantial gate revenue.

He said SULOM needs to work with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the government to facilitate the reopening of the stadium for top-flight football.

Mwachande said restoring the facility to the required standards will benefit not only the two clubs but also SULOM and other stakeholders through increased match-day revenue.

Commenting on the matter, Ministry of Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said the ministry agrees with SULOM’s concerns regarding the stadium.

Kamuzu Stadium did not host any FDH Bank Premiership matches during the first round because it did not meet some of the requirements for staging matches in Malawi’s top-flight league.

As a result, Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were forced to use alternative venues for their home fixtures.
