Alocal Non-Governmental Organization advocating for children’s rights, Eye of the Child, has expressed dismay over the continued abandonment of newborn babies by their biological mothers.
The concern follows the arrest of a 20-year-old woman, Halima Makwinja, by police in Monkey Bay for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby.
The organization’s Marketing and Public Relations Officer, Asiyatu James, said the practice puts the lives of newborn babies at serious risk and has described it as barbaric
James adds that the organization has intensified awareness campaigns on the dangers of such malpractice and community awareness on safe motherwood.
Just two days earlier, a 24-year-old woman in Nsanje District also allegedly abandoned her newborn baby.
