Years after leaving office, former President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera still echoes in the conversations of Malawians in markets, churches, and village meetings. Why? Because he came as more than a politician. He came as a pastor with a promise.
Malawians remember Chakwera first for hope in a hard time. He took power during a period of frustration and gave the nation a new language: Super Hi-5, Tonse Alliance, and a Malawi that works for all. For many, that message alone restored dignity.
Second, he is remembered for putting faith and morals back on the national stage. A theologian turned president, Chakwera prayed with the nation, addressed the pulpit and the podium with the same voice, and reminded leaders that leadership is service. Churches, youth, and women saw one of their own in State House.
Third, the COVID-19 and disaster response. During floods, cyclones, and the pandemic, Chakwera was visible.
He declared national days of prayer, mobilized aid, and spoke directly to grieving families. People felt seen.
Fourth, education and inclusion. His administration expanded university selection and pushed the narrative that every child, from the village to the city, deserves a chance.
Malawians will never forget Lazarus Chakwera because he reminded the country that leadership can wear humility.
He may not have solved everything, but he gave Malawi a moral compass when it needed one most.
In the end, people don’t just remember policies. They remember how a leader made them feel. And Chakwera made many feel hope again.
