Registrar fines eight parties over legal breaches

By Burnett Munthali

Eight political parties in the country are facing fines ranging from K3 million to K5 million after the Registrar of Political Parties uncovered several breaches of political parties laws.

Registrar of Political Parties Kizito Tenthani says compliance inspections conducted by his office revealed various irregularities involving the affected parties.

Among the parties fined are the Assembly for Democracy and Development(ADD), Mbakuwaku Movement for Development(MMD), Nationalist Patriotic Party (NPP) and Liberation for Economic Freedom Party(LEFP).

Tenthani says some of the parties are operating from members’ homes or makeshift premises instead of maintaining established offices as required under the law.

He says the inspections also found that some parties changed their leadership without notifying the Registrar, resulting in their registered particulars not being up to date.

Tenthani says the affected parties have been given 30 days to pay the fines and regularise their records.

He warns that parties that fail to address the identified violations within the stipulated period will face an additional fine of K500,000 for every day the offence continues.
