Malawian boxer Grey Chimkwapulo has won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) All Africa Lightweight title after defeating South Africa’s Tristan Naidoo in Cape Town.
Chimkwapulo, popularly known as “The Knockout,” produced a dominant performance to stop Naidoo in the third round of a scheduled 12-round bout.
The victory marks a major milestone in the 24-year-old boxer’s professional career as he secures one of the notable continental titles in the lightweight division.
Chimkwapulo’s triumph is particularly significant considering the difficulties he faced before reaching South Africa for the much-anticipated fight.
The boxer reportedly spent nearly five days travelling to Cape Town after the bus he was using repeatedly broke down during the journey.
Despite the exhausting trip and the challenges it presented, Chimkwapulo managed to remain focused and delivered a decisive performance once he stepped into the ring.
His early stoppage denied Naidoo the opportunity to take the contest into the later rounds, with Chimkwapulo settling the fight in just three rounds.
Speaking after the victory, Chimkwapulo said he was delighted to finally win the belt he had long desired in his boxing career.
The young boxer’s success also brings renewed attention to Malawi’s professional boxing scene, with his performance demonstrating his growing potential on the continental stage.
Michael Chimaliza, head of New Dawn Boxing Promotions, which manages Chimkwapulo, expressed satisfaction with the boxer’s progress and the latest achievement.
Chimaliza said the victory shows that Chimkwapulo is continuing to make significant progress in his professional boxing career.
Meanwhile, Malawi Professional Boxing Control Board president Lonzo Defector Zimba has congratulated Chimkwapulo, praising his determination to fight despite the difficulties he encountered during his journey to South Africa.
The victory now gives Chimkwapulo the WBF All Africa Lightweight crown and could provide him with an important platform to pursue bigger opportunities in professional boxing.
