NTCHEU — Inkosi Ya Makosi M’mbelwa V of Mzimba has revealed a family connection with Ngwenyama Inkosi Ya Makosi Gomani Maseko V, linking the two traditional leadership houses through Traditional Authority Phambala in Ntcheu.
The disclosure came during the 2026 Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni in Ntcheu, an annual cultural gathering celebrating Ngoni heritage, traditions and community values. Right Honourable Vice President Dr Jane Ansah attended the ceremony, joining traditional leaders and communities gathered to honour Ngoni culture and heritage under the leadership of Gomani Maseko V.
M’mbelwa V said his family roots are connected to both Mzimba and Traditional Authority Phambala, highlighting a family relationship linking the two traditional communities. He made the disclosure while inviting Gomani Maseko V to address the gathering.
In his address, Gomani Maseko V stressed that a Ngwenyama cannot exist without his people, placing community unity and participation at the centre of traditional leadership. He said the five-day Umhlangano was intended to preserve cultural knowledge and pass it on to younger generations.
Gomani also used the gathering to address family and social responsibility, urging parents and elders to teach young people honesty, respect, responsibility and commitment. He cautioned against establishing families through shortcuts, emphasising the importance of responsible relationships and strong family foundations.
The Ngwenyama further called for patriotism and active community participation, encouraging citizens to contribute to development rather than waiting for others to provide solutions.
He also disclosed that K59 million had been raised through a WhatsApp heritage group towards Ngoni heritage-related initiatives and activities associated with the 2026 celebrations. Gomani thanked sponsors and partners for their support, specifically recognising Napoleon Dzombe and Pastor Kawinga.
The five-day 2026 Umhlangano wa Maseko Ngoni concluded in Ntcheu with renewed emphasis on Ngoni heritage, family responsibility, cultural preservation, patriotism and community development, bringing together traditional leadership and government representation in a celebration centred on the Maseko Ngoni identity.
