Standard Bank unveils project youth to expand opportunities for Malawi’s young people

Standard Bank Plc has launched a new youth-focused corporate social investment programme designed to expand opportunities for young Malawians through education, skills development and greater participation in national development.

The initiative, known as Project Youth, was unveiled in Blantyre on Monday by Standard Bank Chief Executive Officer Philip Madinga, who described investment in the country’s young population as a long-term priority rather than a short-term intervention.

Madinga highlighted Malawi’s youthful demographic, noting that between 78 and 80 percent of the country’s population is below the age of 30.

He said the scale of Malawi’s youth population presents both a major opportunity and a responsibility to develop human capital capable of contributing to sustainable economic growth.

According to the bank, Project Youth will focus on three main areas: education and media advocacy; skills development and youth participation; and collaboration and partnerships.

The education component is expected to support efforts aimed at strengthening young people’s access to knowledge and information while promoting discussions around issues affecting their development.

Skills development will form another central component of the programme, with the initiative seeking to help young people acquire practical abilities that can improve their prospects in employment, entrepreneurship and other economic activities.

The youth participation pillar is intended to encourage young Malawians to become more actively involved in issues affecting their communities and the country’s future.

Madinga said the programme reflects Standard Bank’s broader commitment to developing human capital and supporting Malawi’s long-term development ambitions under Vision 2063.

The bank believes that investing in young people can contribute to stronger communities and create a foundation for sustained economic and social progress.

Project Youth will also rely on partnerships, bringing together stakeholders whose expertise and resources can contribute to expanding opportunities for Malawi’s youth.

The initiative comes as Malawi continues to grapple with challenges surrounding youth employment, skills development and economic participation, making programmes focused on young people increasingly significant to the country’s development agenda.

Standard Bank says Project Youth represents a long-term commitment to unlocking the potential of Malawi’s young population and enabling young people to play a greater role in shaping the country’s future.
