Former Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) president Wanthaza Mughogho has taken up a new continental hockey role after being appointed Safeguarding Officer for the African Hockey Federation (AfHF).
According to a letter dated September 7, 2026, seen by this publication, Mughogho will serve in the position until the 16th AfHF Congress, which is scheduled to take place next year.
The appointment marks Mughogho’s return to a leadership role in hockey administration after serving as president of HAM from 2021 to 2025.
Before becoming president, Mughogho served as HAM General Secretary from 2013 to 2015 and as Vice-General Secretary from 2011 to 2013.
His new role will place him within the AfHF’s continental administrative structure, where safeguarding is an important part of efforts to promote safe, respectful and inclusive participation in hockey.
AfHF is the continental governing body for hockey in Africa and operates under the International Hockey Federation (FIH).
It is responsible for developing and promoting hockey across the continent, coordinating continental competitions and supporting national associations in the growth of the sport.
The federation brings together hockey-playing nations from across Africa and organises major continental tournaments, including the African Hockey Cup.
