A police operation to rescue missing British national Nusrat Jiwa Osman in Blantyre on Thursday ended with Deputy Inspector General of Police Noel Kayira injured and several suspects arrested following an exchange of gunfire.
Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito said in an interview with local media that Kayira was injured while leading the operation and is receiving medical treatment at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in the commercial city.

Mukhito said police officers under Kayira’s command successfully located and rescued Osman after exchanging gunfire with people suspected of being behind her disappearance.
He said the suspects were subsequently arrested and remain in police custody as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Osman’s disappearance continue.
Osman has since returned home safely, with her brother, Shobi Jiwa, confirming that she is back with her family.
Her disappearance sparked concern in recent days, with calls for the police to intensify efforts to locate her and ensure her safe return.
United Democratic Front (UDF) president Atupele Muluzi was among those who publicly urged authorities to step up the search for Osman.
Following the rescue, Muluzi commended the Malawi Police Service(MPS) for what he described as professionalism, dedication and bravery during the operation, particularly highlighting Kayira’s role.
He said the rescue was carried out under extremely dangerous circumstances and expressed gratitude that Osman was found alive and reunited with her family.
“Alhamdulillah for answered prayers,” said Muluzi .
The successful operation has brought relief to Osman’s family and those who had been following the search, while investigations continue into her disappearance and the events surrounding her rescue.
