Paraguay president resigns amid banking crisis affecting millions

By Rahim Abdul

Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña has reportedly resigned amid a major banking crisis that has disrupted financial services for millions of customers, sparking public anger and political pressure.

The crisis follows serious financial problems at Ueno Bank, one of the country’s major financial institutions, which reportedly served approximately 2.9 million customers, representing about 60 percent of Paraguay’s adult population.

The bank’s financial difficulties disrupted its services, leaving customers struggling to access their savings, salaries and other funds through banking platforms.

The situation triggered public concern, with affected customers demanding access to their money and calling on authorities to intervene.

Peña also faced political pressure over alleged links to business interests associated with the bank, although he denied any wrongdoing.

The banking crisis has raised concerns about confidence in Paraguay’s financial sector and the government’s handling of the situation.

However, the reported 60 percent figure refers to the proportion of the adult population served by the bank, not the number of people confirmed to have lost access to their accounts.
