A struggling roadside fruit vendor in Lilongwe has received an unexpected K1.6 million financial boost after a Malawian philanthropist based in the United Kingdom mobilised support to help transform his small business.
Mtchona Sawasawa attracted widespread attention after a photograph showing him selling green mangoes and bananas along the footpath near the newly constructed Lilongwe Bridge circulated on social media.
While the image attracted ridicule from some social media users, it caught the attention of UK-based Malawian philanthropist Madalitso Chinguwo, who saw an opportunity to support someone working hard to earn an honest living.
Moved by Sawasawa’s circumstances, Chinguwo launched an appeal on social media, initially seeking to locate the vendor so he could personally provide K200,000 towards expanding his business.
However, what started as an individual act of generosity grew into a wider fundraising effort after Chinguwo involved friends who contributed towards the initiative.

Their collective efforts raised K1.6 million, which has since been handed over to Sawasawa.
Speaking to Nation Online, Chinguwo said his motivation was to help the vendor establish a more sustainable business capable of improving his livelihood and supporting his family.
He said helping someone in need without expecting anything in return brought personal fulfilment, adding that he hoped the financial assistance would open new economic opportunities for Sawasawa.
For the beneficiary, the donation was an overwhelming surprise, particularly because it came from people who had no personal obligation to support him.
Sawasawa admitted that he initially suspected there might be conditions attached to the offer but later realised that the money was freely given to help him strengthen his business.
He revealed plans to invest the K1.6 million as capital for establishing an Airtel Money agency, which he believes could provide a more reliable source of income.
The development offers a powerful reminder that behind every small roadside business is an individual striving to survive, support a family and build a better future.
It also demonstrates how social media, often criticised for promoting ridicule and negativity, can become a platform for mobilising compassion and meaningful community support.
