Former President Joyce Banda has ruled out a return to presidential politics, saying she will not contest the 2030 General Election because she believes it is time for a new generation of leaders to take the country forward.
Speaking during an exclusive interview on Mibawa TV on Sunday, Banda, who founded the People’s Party (PP) in 2011, said she has fulfilled her responsibility to the nation and can continue contributing outside public office.

She said:”Do I have to be in State House to serve this nation?.I will continue serving Malawi in an advisory role.”
Banda said she is proud of the role she played in Malawi’s development and believes her record speaks for itself.
“I have done my part. I have served my nation. Anyone with eyes can see what I did for this country, and anyone with a sense of justice can appreciate my contribution,” said Banda.
She revealed that her current focus is on international assignments, noting that she has been actively engaged in global responsibilities since September 2025.
Banda entered active politics in 1999 when she joined the United Democratic Front (UDF).
She was elected Member of Parliament(MP) for Zomba-Malosa and later held several senior government positions before becoming Malawi’s fourth President and the country’s first female Head of State.
She served as President from 7 April 2012 to 31 May 2014.
She currently chairs the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Panel of Elders, leading peace mediation efforts in Madagascar.
She also serves as the sixth leader of the Global Fairness Initiative, an international organisation that promotes inclusive economic development.
Over the years,Banda has received numerous international honours.
She has been recognised by Forbes as one of the world’s most powerful women and among Africa’s most influential female leaders.
Since September 2025, her international engagements have taken her to countries including India, Nigeria, Mozambique, South Africa, Sierra Leone and Madagascar, where she has participated in peacebuilding, governance and development initiatives.
