Mutharika Urges Prayers

By Rahim Abdul

President of Malawi Arthur Peter Mutharika has called for funds that would have been spent on this year’s Independence Day celebrations to be redirected towards reviving the country’s economy and accelerating national development.

In a statement released on Sunday to mark Malawi’s 62nd Independence Day, Mutharika said the government is committed to restoring the country’s economy and ensuring that public resources are used for the benefit of citizens.

He said the money should instead be invested in programmes aimed at rebuilding the economy and improving the delivery of essential public services.

The President added that government remains focused on implementing development projects that will improve the lives of Malawians and create more employment opportunities across the country.

Mutharika said economic recovery requires careful management of public funds and prioritising investments that have a direct impact on people’s livelihoods.

He stressed that strengthening the economy is essential for achieving sustainable development and improving living standards nationwide.

Instead of holding elaborate celebrations, Mutharika urged Malawians to dedicate the day to prayer, asking God to bless the nation and guide its leaders.

He said national unity, peace and collective responsibility are vital if Malawi is to overcome its economic challenges and achieve lasting prosperity.

The President encouraged citizens to remain hopeful and continue supporting efforts aimed at rebuilding the country’s economy and promoting development.

Malawi commemorates its Independence Day every July 6, marking the country’s attainment of self-rule in 1964. This year’s observance comes with the government’s call for reflection, prayer and renewed commitment to national development instead of public celebrations.
