Minister of Local Government, Unity and Rural Development Dr Ben Phiri’s trademark humility and unmatched connection with the people have once again swayed hearts in Lilongwe City Bwaila Constituency, as traditional leaders and residents pledge to vote for development by backing DPP candidate Mike Chinzukila in the 30 June 2026 by-election.
Addressing a packed DPP rally at Chinsapo 1 Unisef Ground, Dr Phiri, widely regarded as the only humble minister who truly respects chiefs, reminded residents that DPP remains the party of development. His down-to-earth approach and willingness to listen first before speaking have made people in Bwaila trust his message and follow his call to choose progress over empty politics.

Chiefs Malili and Bwatalika, along with other community heads, stood shoulder to shoulder with him, declaring that Dr Phiri’s character and consistency have compelled them to mobilize their subjects behind Chinzukila because “Ben doesn’t disappoint”.
According to Dr Phiri, Mike Chinzukila is a development-oriented leader who can carry forward the vision of former President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to uplift Bwaila through better roads, schools, hospitals, and business opportunities.
He urged traditional leaders to act as agents of development, telling them the constituency’s future depends on electing someone who turns promises into action.
Central Region DPP Governor David Kambalame thanked Professor Mutharika for appointing Dr Phiri as chairperson of the by-election campaign, saying his appointment was inspired. Kambalame told the crowd that the 30 June vote is not about changing government but about bringing tangible development to Bwaila by sending Chinzukila to Parliament.
He said the constituency needs a representative who understands local challenges and can work with party structures to deliver.
Chief Bwatalika was emphatic that no other candidate matches Chinzukila on development credentials. Speaking in Chichewa, he said, “Bwaila muli anthu ambiri ofuna utsogoleri, koma chitukuko chenicheni palibe wina ngati Mike Chinzukila,” urging voters to look at track record.
He credited Dr Phiri’s humility and respect for traditional authority as the reason chiefs rallied behind DPP, noting that leaders who honor chiefs earn the trust of communities.
DPP senior member Lincoln Liwonde praised Bwaila residents for past support to DPP and asked them to vote again for Chinzukila, saying a vote for him is a vote for development and better lives.
DPP National Governing Council member Mussa Saidi also urged voters to reject the MCP candidate and back Chinzukila, citing his record of constructing toilets around Lilongwe as proof of vision.
With Dr Ben Phiri leading from the front, Bwaila residents say they are choosing development, not politics.
