The ruling Democratic Progressive Party is set to fill Chinsapo UNICEF Ground this afternoon as it stages a major rally starting at 2:00 PM, Sunday June 7, 2026.
The event, themed “THE GREAT RETURN TO THE PROVEN LEADERSHIP,” is being used to drum up support for the DPP candidate ahead of the forthcoming by-election slated for June 30 in Bwaila Constituency.
The gathering has drawn special attention due to the presence of Guest of Honour, Hon. Dr. Ben Phiri, Member of Parliament and Minister of Local Government and Rural Development. Party officials and supporters have expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Phiri’s decision to address the rally, noting that his involvement underscores the government’s commitment to grassroots engagement.

A survey conducted by this reporter in Bwaila and surrounding areas reveals that turnout is expected to be significantly higher than usual, largely because of Dr. Phiri’s appearance. Many residents said they plan to attend specifically to hear the minister speak, citing his ability to connect with ordinary citizens and explain government programs in clear, relatable terms.
“Dr. Ben Phiri is the best minister we have right now,” said one party supporter from Area 25. “He doesn’t pomp himself. He is humble, he listens, and he delivers. That’s why people trust him.” That sentiment was echoed across several trading centres visited, with voters praising his hands-on approach to local development issues.
Other senior DPP leaders expected at the rally include Hon. Patricia Wiskes, MP and Minister of Natural Resources, Hon. Mike Chinzukila, Shadow MP for Bwaila, and Hon. David Kambalame, Regional Governor for the Central Region. Their presence, combined with Dr. Phiri’s, is expected to energize the party base as campaigns for the June 30 by-election intensify.
Organizers have urged Bwaila constituents and Lilongwe residents to arrive early to secure space at Chinsapo UNICEF Ground. Security and logistics teams are already in place to manage the anticipated mammoth crowd.
DPP officials say the rally will focus on service delivery, economic empowerment, and the party’s track record in governance. With Dr. Ben Phiri headlining, expectations are high. If the mood on the ground is anything to go by, the minister should prepare for a massive reception from a crowd eager to hear him speak.
