President Professor Peter Mutharika has made it clear that his government will not waste public money.
In a directive released on 15th September 2026, the Office of the President and Cabinet announced an immediate suspension of all government-funded workshops, seminars, and meetings to be held outside duty stations.
The directive means that all government ministries, departments and agencies must now conduct meetings, workshops and official engagements using existing facilities at their duty stations.
No more expensive hotel bookings, no more unnecessary allowances, and no more external venues paid for by taxpayers.
This bold move is part of President Mutharika’s wider austerity agenda aimed at protecting the public purse and ensuring resources are used for essential services and national development.
Controlling Officers in MDAs have been ordered to enforce strict compliance and ensure every expenditure is properly authorized and justified.
Since returning to office, President Mutharika has shown seriousness in fiscal discipline that Malawi has not seen in years.
While other leaders talked about cutting waste, APM is acting.
He is leading by example and ensuring that every kwacha saved goes to schools, hospitals, roads and youth programs.
The decision has been welcomed as a sign of responsible leadership. Under President Mutharika and the DPP government, government is prioritizing efficiency and accountability.
The focus is now on delivering services instead of spending on avoidable expenses.
