In just one year under President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s decisive leadership, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Internal Affairs led by Hon. Peter Mukhito recorded 15 major achievements that made Malawi safer, stronger and more secure.
President Mutharika made it clear from day one that national security was non-negotiable.
Within 12 months, border patrols were intensified and surveillance increased, cutting down smuggling, human trafficking and illegal entry.
At the same time the President approved the purchase of new patrol vehicles and motorcycles for the Malawi Police Service, meaning officers who previously walked long distances could now respond to crime within minutes.
Understanding that morale drives performance, President Mutharika directed the Ministry to rehabilitate dilapidated police houses and build new police posts in rural areas.
Thousands of new police and immigration officers were recruited and trained in human rights, investigation and public order.
Modern radios and ICT equipment were also distributed to improve communication during operations.
Crime fighting was taken to another level. Under Minister Mukhito’s coordination and with full backing from State House, joint operations led to massive seizures of drugs and the closure of illegal brewing dens in towns and trading centers.
Victim Support Units were equipped and staffed to handle gender-based violence and child abuse cases professionally.
Community policing forums were rolled out in every district because President Mutharika believed security must start with the people.
Immigration services were also transformed within that one year.
Processing of passports, permits and citizenship documents became faster, reducing corruption and long queues.
Security at airports, borders and key government installations was upgraded with additional personnel and equipment.
During floods and disasters, the Ministry worked closely with DDMA to provide security and protection to affected communities.
President Mutharika further strengthened inter-agency cooperation between Police, Immigration and Prisons, and enforced discipline to restore public trust in the security services.
Public awareness campaigns on theft, GBV and road safety were launched nationwide.
Malawians felt the impact immediately. Businesses operated with confidence, people moved freely, and the law was respected.
That one year proved what strong leadership can do. While others talked, President Peter Mutharika acted.
Through Hon. Peter Mukhito, he delivered a safer Malawi in just 12 months and set a standard that is still remembered today as the benchmark for security and order in the country.
