Charity shield raised K88 Million for Solar-Powered Water System

By Jones Gadama

The Charity Shield match between Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers raised K88 million, which will be used to install a solar-powered water system at Namanolo Community Hospital in Balaka district.

The funds were raised through ticket sales, with NBS Bank contributing K60 million and Nico Insurance adding K20 million.

The match, held on March 29, 2025, at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, drew a large crowd, and the proceeds will support the hospital’s needs.

NBS Bank, the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), and the Malawi Red Cross Society organized the event, which aims to address various challenges, especially in rural areas.

NBS Bank’s managing director, Temwanani Simwaka, expressed delight that the Charity Shield, launched in 2017, continues to support vulnerable communities through various initiatives.

FAM’s deputy president, Dr. Lameck Zetu Khonje, thanked fans of both teams for their support, which contributed to the success of the event.

The solar-powered water system will improve healthcare services at the hospital.
