Today in Mponela, in Dowa District, daily activities came to a standstill as hundreds of people abandoned their work to watch the final construction works on the M1 road in the area.
According to the residents, their interest stems from the fact that work on the road had stalled for some time.
They said they now believe the area will become more attractive and economically vibrant once the project is completed.
The residents explained that when the road reached this section, movement had become extremely difficult and unsafe.
They added that the poor condition of the road put people’s lives at constant risk.
In 2023, the Government of Malawi began rehabilitation works on the M1 road, which had deteriorated completely.
The dilapidated state of the highway had made it very difficult for citizens to use the road.
