Double win for Malawi! Ben Phiri secures K520m from Iceland as APM attracts US investors to tourism, mining & health

By Jones Gadama

President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s vision of a prosperous, well-governed Malawi is paying off in a big way.

This week Malawi scored a double boost: Iceland injected K520 million to strengthen local councils, while US investors pledged to pour money into tourism, mining, agriculture and health.

Leading the charge on the local government front is Hon. Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development. Under APM’s patriotic and visionary leadership, Dr. Phiri has been working tirelessly to make councils work for the people. And the world is noticing.

Iceland backs APM’s decentralization agenda

The Icelandic Government has committed $300,000, about K520 million, to support tertiary education for 70 local government employees under the Iceland-Malawi Basic Services Programme.

Speaking during the launch in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Iceland Ambassador David Bjarnason said the funding targets the first cohort aimed at strengthening the capacity of local councils.

He praised the partnership with the Ministry of Local Government, saying: _”We are working with district councils and the Ministry of Local Government to improve the services in districts and increase their capacity while also strengthening the institutions.”_

Beneficiaries were presented with certificates at the event. The training will equip council staff with skills in education, health, forestry and gender equality – key areas President Mutharika identified for better service delivery at grassroots level.

This is Dr. Ben Phiri delivering. Because of his hands-on leadership and alignment to APM’s Malawi Agenda 2063, donors now trust that money sent to councils will translate into better clinics, better schools, and better services in our districts.

US investors eye Malawi under APM

On the other side, US investors under the American Chamber of Commerce in Malawi, AmCham, have expressed strong interest to invest beyond aid.

FCA Corp CEO and AmCham founder Robert Schar said AmCham will connect US companies to credible Malawian partners in tourism, agriculture, health and education. Opportunities highlighted include lake tourism, hospitality, healthcare services and university partnerships.

The timing is perfect. Under President Mutharika’s stable and investor-friendly policies, Malawi’s mining sector is also waking up. With progress at Kanyika Niobium in Mzimba and Kangankunde Rare Earths in Balaka, and Mkango and Sovereign Metals finalizing funding, government data shows mining can again contribute significantly to GDP like it did before 2014.

Former Ambassador Hawa Ndilowe, lawyer James Masumbu and executives Chifundo Chiumia, Victoria Zigowa and Leonard Chinsale were also inducted as AmCham trustees during the launch.

APM’s leadership, Malawi’s moment

With Dr. Ben Phiri strengthening public service delivery at council level and President Mutharika opening doors for US direct investment, analysts say Malawi is winning on both fronts: capacity and capital.

This is what visionary, empathetic and patriotic leadership looks like. A President who restores confidence. A Minister who executes with discipline.

Malawi is open for business. And under APM and Dr. Ben Phiri, the future is bright.
