Malawi will egain 20 megawatts (MW) of electricity generation capacity by the end of October as the Electricity Generation Company (EGENCO) begins restoring Unit 6 at Nkula B Hydropower Station after a five-week breakdown.
EGENCO says in a statement that restoration works started following the arrival of a critical spare part, the shaft, needed to repair the unit.

It says unit 6 has been out of service for five weeks after developing a fault that affected its ability to generate electricity.
The company says engineers are now working to return the 20MW unit to operation, with it expecting the restoration to be completed by the end of October 2026.
Once restored and operating at full capacity, Unit 6 is expected to add 20MW to the country’s electricity generation capacity.
The development comes as Malawi continues to face electricity supply challenges caused by breakdowns and other operational constraints, making the availability of generating units crucial as demand grows.
EGENCO has not reported any further major challenges that could delay the restoration beyond the projected completion date.
Consumers will now have to wait for the completion of the works and the subsequent return of Unit 6 to service as part of efforts to improve the reliability of Malawi’s electricity generation system.
