Malawi Government is being fingured of political persecution of its former Executive Chairperson of Salima Sugar Company, Wester Peter Kosamu.
Various sources points to the fact that soon after Salima Sugar former Executive Chairman was relieved from his duties , he has faced political persecution and intimidation from all corners.
Political persecution escalated after the ex-official was given 10 days to vacate his official residence in Area 10 as part of the alleged bullying, Counsel Wester Kosamu was also arrested.
In a letter dated 5th August 2026 and signed by Salima Sugar CEO Clement Kumbemba, the company informed him that it would reclaim company property and the house he occupies.
According to the letter, Salima Sugar sent its driver to collect the Company vehicle at 4pm on 5th August 2026 without giving Kosamu alternative way of travelling.
The company also stated that it has informed the landlord it will handover the house on 30th August 2026, and is therefore requesting Kosamu to vacate the house by 15th August 2026 in order for repairs to be done.
This can only be described as combined actions of “intimidation” and “political bullying” coming shortly after communication on his employment status from the Secretary to the Treasury.
It is also alleged that the eviction notice, the demand for immediate return of the vehicle, and his subsequent arrest were all coordinated to pressure and silence him following concerns he raised about governance and financial decisions at the company.
Salima Sugar Company, has been at the center of public debate over management, debt, and government oversight in recent years.
Poor Corporate Governance
Standard procedure for such companies requires board approval and reasonable notice before reclaiming official residences from outgoing executives. Legal experts note that arrests must also follow due process and be based on specific charges.
What is happening at Salima sugar is a sign that no rules of Corporate Governance are being followed.
