The United States Embassy in Lilongwe has joined institutions congratulating Malawi football star Temwa Chawinga on her second consecutive nomination for the prestigious Women’s Ballon d’Or.
The Embassy says Chawinga continues to make Malawi proud by shining on the international football stage, from her home country to the United States, where she plays for Kansas City Current.

In a message shared on its social media platforms on Monday, the Embassy described Chawinga’s latest nomination as an achievement worth celebrating.
The recognition comes as tributes continue to pour in for the Malawian forward following her inclusion among the 30 nominees for the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or.
Chawinga has now been nominated for the prestigious individual award for two consecutive years, underlining her growing status in world football.
Her second successive nomination also places her among an elite group of female footballers competing for one of the most recognised individual honours in the sport.
The Kansas City Current forward has continued to attract international attention through her performances in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Her rise has provided Malawi with another opportunity to be represented on one of football’s biggest global platforms.
The latest nomination has also sparked celebrations among Malawians, with football supporters and institutions recognising Chawinga’s achievements.
Chawinga has previously made history through her performances in the United States, becoming one of Malawi’s most prominent football exports.
Her continued success is also expected to inspire young girls in Malawi who are pursuing careers in football and looking to compete at the highest level.
The 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or nomination therefore adds another major milestone to Chawinga’s growing international football career.
