247Malawinews has launched a comprehensive nationwide analysis of President Peter Mutharika’s cabinet, tracking every minister’s performance from the day of appointment and swearing in to the present moment.
This publication is committed to conducting the review without fear, favour or political bias, but with strict objectivity, evidence and the voice of Malawians at the centre. Each minister will be assessed using a 20-point scorecard based on delivery, innovation, public engagement, and impact on national development.

Today we turn the spotlight on Hon. George Chaponda, Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and the results are nothing short of extraordinary.
Since his reappointment and swearing in as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2025, George Chaponda has moved with urgency, precision and a rare sense of purpose that has redefined economic diplomacy in Malawi.
He assumed office at a time when Malawi needed bold international engagement to unlock investment, protect its citizens abroad, and reposition the country as a serious player in regional and global affairs.
Chaponda has not just met that expectation, he has shattered it through relentless action, strategic foresight and an unmatched work ethic that has left both diplomats and ordinary citizens applauding.
Chaponda immediately elevated China-Malawi relations by praising Beijing’s development model as a practical lesson for Malawi and publicly commending China’s concrete support.
He highlighted the completed dualization and rehabilitation of the M1 Road from Mchinji Roundabout to Kanengo Turnoff, a project that has dramatically improved connectivity and trade along Malawi’s north-south economic corridor.
He also secured acknowledgement of China’s $20 million debt relief and critical food and fertilizer aid following President Mutharika’s declaration of disaster in 11 districts.
Beyond words, Chaponda ensured the Ministry itself received modern equipment from China, directly strengthening the institution’s capacity to serve Malawians.
With the European Union, Chaponda engineered a decisive shift from dependency on aid to a bold agenda of production, trade and infrastructure investment.
He challenged Malawian exporters to exploit preferential access to European markets and pushed the EU to advance three Global Gateway projects worth €143 million targeting agriculture, energy and youth skills. This pivot reflects the kind of forward-thinking leadership Malawi needs to break cycles of aid reliance.
His engagement with the United Kingdom has been equally dynamic. Chaponda recognized and strengthened the UK’s critical role in the 2025 General Elections through the Malawi Electoral Support Project and Elections Basket Fund, which bolstered electoral institutions and public confidence.
He also leveraged the partnership to spotlight King Charles III’s involvement in aquaculture, fertilizer production and Bua River hydropower, showing his ability to connect diplomacy to tangible economic outcomes.
On food security, Chaponda delivered where it matters most. In November 2025 he secured a 1,000 metric tonne fertilizer donation from Morocco, with the first 500MT arriving by mid-2026 via Songwe Border. That intervention speaks to his commitment to protecting Malawian farmers and ensuring the Ministry of Foreign Affairs plays a direct role in national resilience.
Internationally, Chaponda has projected Malawi’s interests with courage and clarity.
He set the stage for high-level talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to address the disturbing reports of Malawian youths in drone factories linked to the Ukraine conflict, while simultaneously pushing Russia to deepen cooperation in energy, agriculture, mining and health in line with Malawi Vision 2063.
His April 2026 meeting with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty unlocked fresh Egyptian support in infrastructure, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals and technical training, expanding Malawi’s options for development partners.
At global forums, Chaponda has been Malawi’s credible voice. At the World Summit for Social Development in Qatar, he reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to the Copenhagen Declaration, spotlighting the Social Cash Transfer Program with digital payments for transparency and the rollout of free secondary education.
He has championed economic diplomacy as the engine for tackling unemployment, poverty and resource mobilization, insisting that Malawi’s foreign policy must deliver jobs and investment at home.
Perhaps most powerfully, Chaponda has restored dignity to Malawians abroad. 247Malawinews conducted a snap survey in all areas with people with disabilities, and the response was unanimous praise.
Respondents described him as a hard worker, the best Minister of Foreign Affairs Malawi has had, approachable and obsessed with getting things done. Separately, we surveyed Malawians repatriated from South Africa and every voice echoed the same sentiment.
They called George Chaponda a servant of the people, not just a minister, because he respected everyone, stood with them in South Africa during a difficult time, gave them hope and courage, and urged them to use the skills they acquired to rebuild their lives at home. That is diplomacy with a human face.
All these achievements reveal a minister who acts, who delivers, and who understands that foreign affairs is not about endless meetings but about results.
George Chaponda has worked tirelessly, negotiated boldly, protected Malawians, and attracted real investment and support.
He combines intellect with empathy, strategy with action, and vision with execution. Malawi needs leaders like him, leaders who turn policy into progress.
For this remarkable record, 247Malawinews awards George Chaponda a full scale of 20 points out of 20.
Twenty points is the full scale on our performance scorecard, and he has earned every single point through measurable impact and public trust.
Finally, this analysis also commends President Peter Mutharika for his visionary leadership in assembling a cabinet of capable, action-oriented ministers.
The appointment of George Chaponda demonstrates the President’s commitment to placing the right person in the right position to drive national transformation.
247Malawinews will continue this objective review across all ministries, minister by minister, because Malawians deserve accountability, and this government deserves recognition where it is due.
