Malawian musician Gwamba has said he will no longer support the booking of South African artists to perform in Malawi, accusing many of them of remaining silent over xenophobic violence in their country.
The artist said he is disappointed that only a few South African musicians have publicly condemned the attacks targeting foreign nationals.
According to Gwamba, artists have a responsibility to use their influence to speak against violence and injustice.
He made the remarks in a video circulating on social media, where he questioned why artists who have remained silent should continue to be welcomed to perform in Malawi.
“Only a few artists have condemned what is happening. Why should those who stayed silent come and perform here?” Gwamba said.
He added that he would oppose any promoter or individual who intends to bring such artists to Malawi.
“I will stand against anyone who wants to bring those artists to Malawi,” he said.
His comments come amid renewed concern over xenophobic violence in South Africa, where foreign nationals have periodically been targeted in violent attacks.
The incidents have attracted criticism from various individuals and organizations across the African continent, who have called for stronger action against xenophobia.
Gwamba’s position is expected to generate debate among music fans, promoters and fellow artists on whether entertainers should publicly speak out on social and humanitarian issues.
