Political tensions flared in Kitwe on Friday after the convoy of opposition presidential candidate Brian Mundubile came under attack, leaving several vehicles damaged.
According to reports from the scene, a group of individuals allegedly stoned the convoy as it travelled through the area.
Preliminary information indicates that at least eight vehicles in the convoy sustained damage during the incident.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show some of the events surrounding the attack, including an individual whom some online users have alleged was among those involved.
However, the identity of those responsible and the circumstances surrounding the incident had not been independently verified at the time of publication.
No official statement had yet been issued by law enforcement authorities confirming the identities of the alleged attackers or announcing any arrests.
The reported attack has heightened concerns over political violence as Zambia’s election campaign gathers momentum.
Political stakeholders and civil society organisations have repeatedly called on all parties and their supporters to conduct peaceful campaigns and respect democratic principles.
