Malawi Netball Queens bounced back from their opening defeat to register their first victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after defeating Northern Ireland 64-48 in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Queens responded strongly after suffering a loss to South Africa in their opening fixture, producing a much improved performance that revived their hopes in the tournament.
Veteran shooter Mwai Kumwenda was the star of the match, delivering a remarkable display by scoring 58 of Malawi’s 64 goals to lead her side to a convincing win.
Kumwenda received valuable support from Ethel Ng’ambi, whose movement and passing in attack helped create scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
Captain Takondwa Lwazi marshalled the team effectively from the centre court, controlling the tempo and ensuring smooth transitions between defence and attack.
In defence, Sophie Banda and Shabel Bengo stood firm, frustrating Northern Ireland’s attackers with disciplined marking and timely interceptions.
Malawi maintained control for most of the match, opening a comfortable lead and preventing their opponents from mounting a serious comeback.
The victory marked an important response from the Queens, who had been eager to recover after their disappointing opening day defeat against South Africa.
The result also highlighted the team’s resilience, with the players showing greater composure, improved teamwork and clinical finishing in front of goal.
Attention now turns to another difficult assignment as Malawi prepare to face England in their next Commonwealth Games fixture.
The Queens will then take on defending powerhouse Australia in what is expected to be another major test of their medal ambitions.
