The Malawi Prison Service has called on the public to warmly welcome and provide a conducive environment for the 134 inmates who have been pardoned yesterday during this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Prison Service spokesperson, Steve Charles Meke, says communities should support the pardoned inmates as they reintegrate into society, stressing that community acceptance is key to their successful rehabilitation.

Meke has also commended President Peter Mutharika for granting the pardon, saying the move will help decongest the country’s correctional facilities while giving the beneficiaries a second chance to rebuild their lives.

On Monday, president Mutharika pardoned 134  prisoners as part of this year’s independence celebration day.
