Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri, has reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with India, describing the partnership as critical for national development and improved service delivery at grassroots level.

Dr. Phiri made the remarks on Thursday in Lilongwe when he hosted the High Commissioner of India to Malawi, Amararam Gujar, during a courtesy call at his office. The meeting focused on expanding cooperation in governance, infrastructure, and human capital development.

Commending India’s long-standing support, Hon. Ben Phiri outlined several priority areas for collaboration.

He emphasized capacity building within the local government service to strengthen district councils, the establishment of sister-city partnerships to promote cultural and economic exchange, and the rollout of the “Red Star Project” aimed at rehabilitating and beautifying old government buildings across the country.

The Minister particularly praised India’s pledge to increase scholarship opportunities for Malawians. “Education is the foundation of development, and India’s commitment to expand scholarships will equip our youth with skills needed to drive Malawi 2063,” Dr. Phiri said, noting that skilled human resources remain central to transforming local governance and rural development.

Hon. Ben Phiri also welcomed India’s continued investment in infrastructure, highlighting the planned expansion of the Mahatma Gandhi Road from Ginnery Corner to CI in Blantyre.

He said the project will ease congestion, boost trade, and improve connectivity for communities in Malawi’s commercial capital.

In his response, High Commissioner Gujar applauded the Ministry’s reformed Constituency Development Fund guidelines, calling them “an important tool for promoting accountability and effective utilization of development resources.” He assured Dr. Phiri of India’s continued support in implementing projects that directly benefit Malawian citizens.

The courtesy call underscored the growing mutual respect between the two nations. Under Hon. Ben Phiri’s leadership, the Ministry of Local Government continues to position itself as open to strategic partnerships that deliver tangible results for communities.

His vision for stronger international cooperation and prudent resource management is already yielding dividends, with India now poised to play a bigger role in Malawi’s development journey.

As Malawi pursues inclusive growth, Hon. Dr. Ben Malunga Phiri’s diplomatic engagement with India sets a clear example of proactive leadership focused on building partnerships that work for the people.
