M’mbelwa council tightens CDF project standards

By Burnett Munthali

M’mbelwa District Council has warned contractors working on Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects that poor workmanship and unnecessary delays will not be tolerated, as the council moves to ensure communities receive quality infrastructure on time.

The council’s District Commissioner, Emmanuel Bulukutu, issued the warning on Friday during a contract-signing meeting in Mzimba.

Bulukutu urged contractors to follow approved construction standards throughout project implementation.

He said contractors are expected to manage their assignments effectively, meet agreed deadlines and ensure that projects delivered to communities met the required specifications.

“Contractors should be committed to the work they have been awarded and should not compromise on quality. The projects must be completed within the given timeframe and should meet the required standards,” he said.

He also encouraged contractors to engage local contractors and suppliers where appropriate, saying the approach helps minimise delays and ensure smooth implementation of the projects.

On his part,Project Manager for Union Building Contractors, which has been contracted to construct Mlangali Primary School in Mzimba Kafukule, Blessings Kombe said the company has taken note of the council’s concerns.

Kombe said the company will develop a clear work plan and closely monitor construction activities to ensure the school project is completed on schedule while maintaining the required quality.

“As a contractor, we have taken note of the District Commissioner’s call to deliver quality projects within the agreed timeframe. We are committed to ensuring that the project given to us is implemented according to the required standards and avoid unnecessary delays,” he said.

Kombe added that the company will work with local contractors and suppliers whenever necessary to facilitate efficient implementation of the project.

The CDF projects are scheduled to be launched on September 28, 2026.
