United Transformation Movement (UTM ) senior member and Rumphi Central legislator Matthews Mtumbuka has condemned threats of political violence following remarks by Democratic Progression Party (DPP) politician and Deputy Minister of Homeland Security Norman Chisale, who allegedly warned UTM members that they will be beaten if they continue with what he described as provocative political activities.
In a video circulating on social media, Chisale is heard asking UTM members to tone down their political activities, warning that the two sides could end up fighting.
He also appealed to traditional leaders to allow him to deal with people he accused of causing political disturbances.

“UTM, please be careful. Because of your behaviour of moving from one place to another, we may end up fighting. Chiefs, allow me to deal with these people. Do not say I am doing this because I am in government,” said Chisale.
In response Mtumbuka, says Malawi should not return to the era when political differences were settled through intimidation, violence and destruction.
Writing on his Facebook page, Mtumbuka has asked Chisale when he will start beating UTM members.
“When will you start beating us, UTM? This is not the 1980s,it is 2026.No to politics of destruction, damage and death. Yes to debate and development,” says Mtumbuka.
Mtumbuka has further reminded Chisale and the DPP that Malawi is a multiparty democracy and that political leaders should focus on delivering on their promises to Malawians rather than threatening rival political parties.
He says political power comes from the people and can also be taken away by the people, urging those in government to concentrate on development and fulfilling their electoral commitments.
The remarks come amid increased political activity involving UTM and MCP officials.
UTM president Dalitso Kabambe and Mtumbuka have recently been seen meeting with former President and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader Lazarus Chakwera in Kasungu, although the nature of their discussions has not been publicly disclosed.
