Malawi’s security profile has received a major boost on the global stage after Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito led the country’s delegation to the 5th United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit, UNCOPS 2026, in New York.
The summit gathered world leaders and top law enforcement officials to shape the future of international security cooperation.
Malawi’s presence, led by Mukhito, signaled the country’s growing commitment to fighting modern crime while learning from global best practices.
Speaking at the forum, Mukhito told delegates that security threats such as cybercrime, terrorism, human trafficking and transnational organized crime can no longer be handled in isolation.
He emphasized the need for strong international partnerships anchored on trust, information sharing and coordinated action.
He said, _“No nation can defeat modern criminal networks alone. We must work together through intelligence sharing and technology,”adding that, _“Under the leadership of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, Malawi is committed to building a professional, accountable and people-centred security sector. We are here to learn, to partner, and to contribute to global peace.”_
The Minister is using the summit to build strategic linkages with global security experts and policing institutions.
Discussions focused on digital policing, intelligence-led crime prevention, forensic science, border management, and capacity building for officers — areas that government says are central to strengthening Malawi’s national security architecture.
According to the Ministry, Malawi under Mukhito’s leadership has witnessed a total transformation in the security sector.
Criminal cases have reduced significantly across the country as a result of reforms, improved policing, and a renewed focus on community safety.
Citizens in both urban and rural areas are now reporting increased confidence in law enforcement.
Mukhito attributed the progress to the clear vision of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, saying the administration remains committed to protecting lives and property.
“Malawi is blessed to have a leader like Honourable Mukhito at this time. He is a servant who works tirelessly to deliver on the President’s vision of a safe and secure Malawi,” a senior official at the summit noted.
The Minister’s participation also highlights Malawi’s contribution to global peace.
Malawian police officers serving in UN peacekeeping missions continue to earn international recognition for their discipline and dedication.
As the summit continues, government expects that the knowledge, technologies and partnerships Mukhito is forging in New York will directly benefit Malawi upon his return.
Plans are already underway to modernize the Malawi Police Service and enhance cooperation in the fight against transnational crime.
With bold leadership and international engagement, Malawi’s security sector is being repositioned not just to respond to crime, but to prevent it — a move many believe will secure a safer future for all Malawians.
