ADDIS ABABA – The African Presidency Accountability Council – APAC has ranked Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika as the best performing African president in its Mid-Year Report on governance, human rights and political stability.
Releasing the report in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, APAC Secretary General Ahmed Sankoh Sheriff described Mutharika as “an African star shining in Malawi” for what he called outstanding leadership in less than six months in office.
“President Mutharika has beaten a number of African presidents on delivery and commitment to the people,” Sheriff said. “He has managed to meet the needs of suffering Malawians, especially in terms of food. Malawi’s staple food is maize and Malawians are now able to purchase food at affordable prices.”
In its full statement, APAC said Malawi had registered remarkable progress in stabilizing governance and restoring public confidence.
_“Our mid-year assessment shows that President Arthur Peter Mutharika has demonstrated decisive leadership, respect for democratic institutions, and a clear focus on citizen welfare. Within six months, his administration has prioritized food security, economic stability, and inclusive governance. The ability of Malawians to access maize at affordable prices is a direct reflection of leadership that listens and responds,”_ the statement read in part.
_“We commend President Mutharika for setting a benchmark in Africa. His performance proves that accountable leadership can deliver tangible results within a short period,”_ APAC added.
Sheriff said APAC will release detailed country scorecards next month covering all 54 AU member states.
