Mutharika wins big: AfDB approves $20.5 million for Malawi as donors hail his leadership

By Jones Gadama

The African Development Bank has approved $20.5 million in direct budget support for Malawi, with senior Bank officials linking the decision to confidence in the leadership of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

The funding, worth about K34 billion, was approved by the AfDB Board on September 1, 2026.

AfDB Director General and Acting Vice-President for Africa, Abdou Kamara, announced the approval during a meeting with Finance Minister Joseph Mwanamvekha on the sidelines of the eighth Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation Ministerial Conference in Seoul.

Kamara said the support reflects the Bank’s confidence in Malawi’s current economic direction and governance.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister Mwanamvekha said the approval is further proof that development partners continue to trust the Mutharika administration.

He noted that in recent months Malawi has been receiving increased support from donors across health, agriculture, energy and governance sectors, with partners citing the President’s focus on stability, transparency and his zero tolerance policy on corruption as key reasons for their continued engagement.

“The President’s leadership has put Malawi back on the radar of development partners. They see commitment, they see accountability, and that is why they are coming forward with support,” Mwanamvekha said.

President Mutharika has consistently pushed for prudent public finance management and stronger accountability in government.

Officials say that stance has helped unlock fresh resources from institutions like the AfDB, which have described Malawi as a partner making steady progress on reforms.

The $20.5 million budget support is expected to provide fiscal space for government to fund priority social programs and maintain service delivery as outlined in the national budget.

The AfDB remains one of Malawi’s major development partners, with a portfolio spanning infrastructure, agriculture, and social protection. Government says it will ensure the new funds are used transparently and in line with agreed reforms.

The Korea-Africa Economic Cooperation conference is bringing together African and Korean leaders to discuss trade, investment and financing for Africa’s development.
