No one can stop Chakwera from standing in 2030- Mvula

By Our Reporter

Veteran political, social and governance commentator Humphreys Mvula says the eligibility of who can stand as a candidate for the 2030 general elections is already outlined in the Constitution of Malawi.

Mvula said he does not know which constitution bars President Lazarus Chakwera from contesting, arguing that those making such claims are probably referring to a party constitution.

“If the answer is that, then ‘izo zikambiranani kwanu konko’,” Mvula said.

He added that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) should understand that no one can stop Chakwera from standing and should instead improve its party constitution to be in tandem with the country’s Constitution.

Mvula further said no one can be pushed out of a position they attained at the last convention before the next convention.

He has since advised the MCP to avoid the early campaigns it has commenced and instead focus on building party structures.

“The party must avoid carrying emotions in their decision making processes so that they should come up with the best candidate from the available pool of probables” Mvula concluded.
