Recent claims that First Vice President Dr. Jane Ansah will “assume the presidency in two months” have fueled speculation of a rift with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
The record, however, shows no such division. The President and his deputy remain in good working terms and continue to coordinate on government priorities.
The current noise is being driven by uncivilized activists seeking to create confusion and tension where none exists, at a time when government is focused on delivery.
The speculation peaked after Dr. Ansah missed chairing a cabinet meeting. That absence was not sidelining. Days earlier, the Vice President collapsed while laying wreaths at the funeral of a police officer and sustained an injury.
In the same week, a tyre on her convoy burst, leaving her traumatized. On medical advice she took sick leave to recover and has since resumed official duties.
Dr. Ansah has herself dismissed the allegations, calling it unfortunate that some people want to divide her with the president. State House sources confirm regular briefings between the two principals on policy, security, and service delivery.
The President has never at any point said he is not in good terms with his Vice. Malawians should therefore leave the President and his Vice alone as they serve the nation and stop spreading false claims.
