Health Advantages of Okra

0

By Burnett Munthali

Sometimes called “lady’s finger,” okra is a flowering plant with edible seed pods. It grows best in warm climates and is often cultivated in Africa and South Asia.

Though technically a fruit, okra often gets used like a vegetable in cooking. You might be familiar with okra as an ingredient in gumbo, for example. Though not necessarily a household name in healthy foods, okra still has plenty of nutritional value.

Health Benefits

Okra is low in calories but packed full of nutrients. The vitamin C in okra helps support healthy immune function. Okra is also rich in vitamin K, which helps your body clot blood.

Some of the other health benefits of okra include:

Fights Cancer

Antioxidants are natural compounds that help your body fight off molecules called free radicals that can damage cells. Free radicals are most well known for causing oxidation damage, which can eventually lead to cancer.

Okra contains antioxidants called polyphenols, including vitamins A and C. It also contains a protein called lectin which may inhibit cancer cell growth in humans. Studies using concentrated compounds from okra showed they inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells by up to 63%. Further research is needed for definitive proof of okra’s cancer-blocking properties.

Supports Heart and Brain Health

Polyphenols decrease your risk of heart problems and stroke by preventing blood clots and reducing free radical damage. The antioxidants in okra may also benefit your brain by reducing brain inflammation.

Mucilage—a thick, gel-like substance found in okra—can bind with cholesterol during digestion so it is passed from the body. An eight-week study conducted on mice showed lower blood cholesterol levels after they were fed a high-fat diet containing okra powder.

Controls Blood Sugar

Various studies have shown okra may help control blood sugar levels. Researchers believe okra may help prevent sugar from being absorbed during digestion.

In one study, rats given purified okra and liquid sugar had fewer blood sugar spikes than rats in the control group. More evidence is needed to confirm that okra helps control blood sugar levels in humans.

Prenatal Support

One cup of okra has 15% of the daily value of folate, a helpful nutrient for pregnant women. Folate helps reduce the risk of neural tube defects, which can affect the brain and spine of developing fetuses.

Nutrition

Okra is rich in vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants that help reduce the risk of serious health conditions like cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.

Citizens pleads with Sports Ministry to support all sports bodies

By Vincent Gunde

A concerned citizen of Malawi Isaiah Emmanuel Sunganimoyo, has called on the Ministry of Sports and Malawi Council of Sports to provide equal support to all sports bodies without segregation for all to feel that they are affiliated to their mother body.

Sunganimoyo said he has been reliably informed that some sports bodies receive government money amounting to K5 million for its activities every year saying if this indeed is true, the government must step in to review for all sports bodies to deliver good results.

He said he has learnt that the Malawi Boxing Association (MABA) is appealing for the support of K10 million to enable their boxers travel to South Africa for a Boxing tournament saying this appeal should go to the government to fund the boxers.

Speaking through a video clip circulating in various social media platforms, Sunganimoyo said he had time to consult sports bodies on how much budget is needed to run their activities for the whole year observing that K50 to K60 million is a good figure and not K5 million.

He has called for equality of all sports bodies saying they are there to produce players who will in turn raise the Malawi flag high at international levels claiming that supporting MABA with K10 million they will come back home with K50 million meaning that government has made profit.

Isaiah Emmanuel Sunganimoyo.-sports bodies must be treated equally.

The citizen said he would have loved that all sports bodies affiliated to Malawi Sports Council such as Volleyball, Basketball, Chess, NAM and MABA, and others, should not be under-looked wondering as to when will the government recognize them as big sporting organizations.

“For years, sports bodies are categorized into big and small, this must be put to a stop for all the sports categories to benefit equally,” said Sunganimoyo.

He has thanked President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for allowing Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda to put a side a budget of K7 billion to go towards the development of sports in the country.

Sunganimoyo said this money is so huge to benefit over 45 sports bodies affiliated to Malawi Council of Sports advising the officials to share the money to all sports disciplines saying if it is to abuse the cash they should do it by themselves and not the Ministry of Sports and Sports Council officials sharing into their pockets.

Vendors based at Tsoka Market in Lilongwe have threatened to take  unspecified action if Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) will continue imposing a ban  on the secondhand underwear clothes.

In 2022, the MRA imposed A ban on the importation of the second hand clothes particularly underwears saying these clothes are contributing to outbreak of skin deaeses in the county.

However, Chairperson for Tsoka flea market Steven Magombo insists this saying that there is no evidence that second hand clothes contribute to transmission of skin deases because they clean them with washing powder before put them on sale.

Magombo wonders why MRA imposes the ban without the knowledge of the vendors.

“There is no way to ban such clothes because currently no evidence that show thar  they contribute to the transmission of skin deases, and we believe that the move by  MRA  is to interfere our business,” says Magombo.

MRA officials denied to comment on the matter.

Some few weeks ago, Tsoka flea market  Vendors staged a strike and stormed MRA offices to deliver their petition.
