Nyale Institute, a non – governmental organization whose aim is to advance sexual and reproductive health justice for for all has called on relevant authorities and other stakeholders to review sexual reproductive health law.
Nyale Institute Director Godfrey Kangaude made the sentiments when he was commenting on the revelations that 849 young women and girls were treated at post abortal clinic in Blantyre city alone this year.
Safe motherhood coordinator for Blantyre District health office (DHO) Ellida Bvutula revealed this during a stakeholders meeting in Blantyre recently.

Kangaude observed that while the public may focus on the decision to have an abortion by the women, there is a secret behind any decision by the woman to abort a pregnancy.
He further said that justice requires people to look at underlying issues behind girls and women who need abortion.
Kangaude emphasized that Nyale Institute does not under any circumstance promote or encourage abortion, but rather advocates for a legal and policy environment in which every person has the right to enjoy sexual and reproductive health, in accordance with the obligations of the government under national and international law.
He also disclosed that they are supporting a court case, whereby a 14-year-old girl is asking a question of whether she can access abortion legally if she is raped in regard to the section 19(1) (a) and 19(2) of the gender equality act.
Libertas General Insurance company has for the first time emerged the overall winner of this year’s annual insurance quiz competition after outclassed the General Alliance Insurance company.
In a highly competitive final competition played in Blantyre on thursday, Libertas General Insurance got 12.5 points against 11.5 points of its competitor.
Apart from medals, the Libertas General Insurance company was decorated with a state -of -the -art trophy and monetary present of MK900,000 while General Alliance Insurance company went away with a trophy and MK600,000 monetary present.

On the third position, United General Insurance Company (UGI) went away with a trophy and MK480,000 monetary present.
Speaking in an interview after the four day competition, Old Mutual Malawi Group Capital Executive Officer, Rex Kadzongwe thanked all insurers for taking part in the event.
Kadzongwe said since Old Mutual Malawi started supporting the competition years ago, the company has been impressed with the outcome of the results, saying it had helped to identify new raw talent and enhance knowledge and expertise among the competitors and the audience.
“This is one measure that has helped to bring about awareness among the communities on insurance issues.
“Through this competition, we have also witnessed many people registering for various types of insurance but a lot needs to be done to narrow the gap on insurance penetration in the country.
“The country has so far introduced various measures aimed at wooing many people into the insurance industry, but the penetration is still at 2.5 percent,” he said.
Kadzongwe assured the insurers that Old Mutual Malawi will be back in a bigger way with yet another exciting big financial support towards the competition in the future, to delight the competitors.
Old Mutual Malawi has been the main sponsor of this year’s insurance quiz competition, and it pumped in MK7 million.
In another separate interview, Libertas General Insurance Company representative, Caroline Masumba said she was delighted that her team won.
Masumba further attributed her team’s astonishing performance to the good company that she had in her partners.
President for the Insurance Institute of Malawi (IIM) Hastings Kapesa said his institution was satisfied with progress made so far from the competition, as more young talents are being identified into the industry.
“The new blood that are identified help to nurture the future of insurance in the country,” he said.
In a subsidiary individual best performers category, Caroline Masumba from the Libertas General Insurance company was awarded the best performer and she pocketed MK100,000 cash prize followed by Christina Namalomba from Old Mutual Malawi who got MK75,000 for claiming the second position while Boniface Sitima from Prime Insurance company was given MK50,000 for emerging third.
A total of twenty insurance companies participated in this year’s quiz competition whose main aim was to ensure professionalism in the insurance industry.
The government has been urged to promote motorsport (spinning) in the country.
Speaking on Saturday in Chilobwe, Blantyre, Spinners Nest Motorsport Chairman Geoffrey Jarid said the motorsport in Malawi continues facing a lot of challenges such as lack of spaces where the sport can be taking place and lack of sponsors.
“Motorsport in Malawi continues facing a lot of challenges. Currently, we do not have a place where we can be doing the sport. This challenge is dragging us behind. Lack of sponsors is another challenge which is hugely affecting us. We therefore, calling the government to consider motorsport (spinning) and support its growth,” said Jarid.
He said as a group, they are currently, under monitoring period by authorities and they have hope to make Malawi a motorsport-spinning playing nation.
On his part, a spinner and a member of Spinners Nest Motorsport, Blessings Malemba expressed happiness that motorsport (spinning) is now in Malawi.
“To be true, I am happy that we now have motorsport in Malawi. We just calling on the government to give it support as the chairman said,”he said.
In Africa, Motorsport is played in many countries such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa just to mention some.

Sendeza handedover different food items to people of the area and cash on top. The items include maize flour, sugar, soap and tea leaves.
In her speech Sendeza said she decided to come to and donates these items as one way of celebrating Christmas. She said Christmas means sharing gifts with loved ones.
On political scene, Sendeza commended Malawi Leader Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for various safety nets programs taking place in her constituency.

The Minister said Chakwera has made tremendous achievements despite his Government operating in a hostile environment.
Sendeza gave an example on how Mtukula pakhomo has helped to change the lives of people in her area.
Commenting on hunger situation, the Minister assured people in her area that as President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has always been saying , no one will die of hunger.
She said Government will be distributing maize to every hunger striken person.
Meanwhile Village headman Mgwata has commended the Minister for the support.
The chief said his people did not expect that guesture from the Minister especially during this time of Christmas..
The headman urged the Minister to continue helping the less privileged as she has done.
