By Golden Kang’oma

Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, has called for collaborative efforts by different stakeholders in making sure that trees planted during the National Forestry Season survive and conservation initiatives put in place.

Kamtukule made the call on Monday during a tree planting exercise at Maganga Tourism Public Beach and Integrated Resort in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Maganga in Salima.

Vera Kamtukule

She said authorities should not plant trees just to tick a box but to make sure that all the planted trees are taken care of and its purpose fulfilled.

“Mostly when trees are planted we divert our attention to some other things instead of the planted trees. What we want is to take responsibility of ensuring that all trees planted survive,” said Kamtukule.

Kamtukule disclosed that her ministry plans to plant 10,000 trees at the resort which requires support from different stakeholders.

“The ministry alone cannot achieve this without stakeholders. It is my plea that we should all take charge and full responsibility of the trees we are planting,” she said.

District Commissioner for Salima, James Mwenda, said the tree planting exercise will change the landscape of the resort as well as help in climate smart initiatives.

“As a district council, we are excited with the initiative as it will go a long way in conserving the environment and marking the territories of the resort,” he said.

Mwenda said it is exciting that youth are actively involved in the exercise which highlights sustainability and a good succession plan.

TA Maganga said she will ensure that the planted trees are well taken care of, and more are planted.

Shadow Member of Parliament (MP) for Mchinji West Constituency, Dr. John Paul, has called upon Mchinji citizens, especially those conducting their businesses in the main market, to always observe hygiene as a way of keeping the district clean.

The call was made during a clean-up exercise introduced by the shadow MP, which partly served as a continuation of the clean-up exercise that President Lazarus Chakwera launched in the country.

Dr John Paul

“Introducing this clean-up exercise is one way of reminding people that no one will come to take care of our surroundings except us; thus, there is a need to take ownership and responsibility by making sure we are living in a hygienic environment,” he explained.
He stated that people need to take extra care because the district is close to Zambia, which is battling Cholera at the moment, and leaving garbage in the streets without properly disposing of it exposes people to such diseases.

Chairperson for Mchinji Market, Petulo Njolomole, said this exercise will help keep their business places clean and attractive to customers.

“We appreciate this exercise because not only will it help keep our surrounding clean but also help us understand the role of taking ownership and taking responsibility in handling hygiene issues in the market,” said Njolomole.

Njolomole appreciated Paul for providing them with 20 bins stating that these will be placed in the right places.
He, therefore, urged people to use them and not litter anyhow.
The clean-up exercise will take place around Mchinji market for not less than five days and some of the youths from Traditional Authority Nyoka, Zulu and Mlonyeni have joined the exercise.

By Chisomo Phiri

Citizens for Transformation (CFT) has strongly condemned the political violences that have been happening in the country.

In its statement, CFT is mentioning the violences like the stoning of a standing government official  Minister of Local Government at a political event in Zomba, disruption during recent Presidential visit that took a violent turn in Blantyre and the recent violent hacking with pangas of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters celebrating their Blue Day in Lilongwe.

According to CFT, these obnoxious incidents must not be treated as isolated and insignificant events perpetrated by some rogue disgruntled individuals but rather a serious state security threat as well as a threat to Malawi’s hard-won multiparty democracy.

Mtambo

Reads the statement in part :”CFT wishes to remind the sponsors and patrons of political violence and hate speech in Malawi, that they neither have any political future nor space in the modern era of political plurality in which progressive forces engage each other in ideological and developmental endeavours.

“We, the CFT would like to reiterate, that when Malawians opted to return to multiparty democracy in the referendum of 1993, it was an act of collective affirmation for political tolerance, and ideological differences as well as embracing a full spectrum of political and human rights as enshrined in our national constitution.

“To this end, CFT will not sit idle and watch our beloved country degenerate into a ‘Failed-State’ due to the actions of rogue politicians and citizens.
We would like to remind our fellow Malawians, that the responsibility of respecting the constitution of Malawi which provides political freedoms and human rights to government officials, politicians, political parties, their supporters, and all law-abiding citizens in Malawi.”

CFT has however, called on the Ministry of Homeland security to instil peace, law, and order by speedily bringing to justice all perpetrators of political violence and hate speech as Malawi is approaching  towards the 2025 tripartite elections.

“The CFT is calling for Zero tolerance on any form political violence and intimidation.

“We, the CFT will therefore, remain true to our core values of freedom and equality for all; trust for all; economic empowerment for all; national solidarity for all sacrifice and patriotism for all Malawians. We, the CFT will not rest until all these objectives have been met for All,”concludes the statement.

Muvi wa Chilungamo says Malawi  democracy needs to be upheld as it condemns police violence

Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolutionary Party (MRP) says Malawians need democracy to remain in their country and any signs of dictatorship must be condemned and abandoned in strongest terms possible.

MRP says Malawians across the country must not condone or submit their allegiance in violence saying Malawi Congress Party (MCP) must be held accountable and responsible for the attacks on innocent citizens belonging to another party that planned their Blue Convoy Parade in Lilongwe under the confines of the law.

The party has cautioned the MCP and its entire leadership to stop the violence henceforth before the country plunges into tragedy of mass killings and indiscriminate attacks on members of both the opposition parties and government.

In a statement released with the title “Malawi on the pathway towards ethnicity and civil strife under MCP,” the MRP has condemned and abhor the barbaric actions of a political party that happens to be in the government-MCP.

The MRP says the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has planted seeds of disunity in the main opposition party with the archaic intention of perpetrating violence and blame the factionalism in the official opposition party.

The Party says democratic atmosphere in Malawi is slowly dying having learnt with shock and disappointment to see and hearing the violent attacks and destruction of vehicles in Lilongwe instead of democracy maturing 30 years later after multipartism and democracy.

The MRP has called upon President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera to call his party to order or risk this country enter into turmoil observing that the fact that the previous government-DPP was brutal and violent does not give the MCP liberty to do likewise,” two wrongs do not make one right.”

The party says it is high time Malawi practiced mature politics with perhaps clear and honest translation saying politics is not Kung Fu or martial arts, it is a practice of the minds not brutal attacks as evidenced with MCP politics.

It says the Malawi Police Service (MPS) needs “Radical Reform” to take non-partisan charge so as to ease the tension which is a time bomb for ethnicity and civil war lamenting that Malawi as from 2012 is an injured nation.

“Succeeding government are supposed to come with a new project of healing not provocation and anarchy, Malawians need peace, democracy and the rule of law as well as an impartial police service,” reads part of the statement.
