The Civil Society leaders in Malawi have congratulated Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on the recommendation by the Accreditation Subcommittee of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) that the A-Status of the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) be sustained.

Addressing a news conference in Lilongwe, Independent Civil Society leaders Chairperson, Ceaser Kondowe said this recognition indicates that Malawi has done well in as far as human rights is concerned.

“This is yet another milestone in his commitment on ensuring that the rights of Malawians are not only upheld but also promoted as enshrined in the Republic of Malawi Constitution as read in Chapter 4,” he said.

Kondowe who was flanked by veteran activis Unandi Banda and Caleb Ng’ombo said the award of an ‘A’ status to the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRI) is made based on a number of reasons one being the role of government and the state in the restoration, sustenance of promotion and protection of human rights in that country for example, providing adequate support to the NHRI.

He said the President and his Government are being applauded as having directly contributed to a credible NHRI in Malawi by creating an environment in which human rights are protected and support institutions that serve as human rights watchdogs.

The CSO leaders said Malawi NHRI is being recognized worldwide due to the support, they are receiving from Government without interfering with their independence.

“The support that the GANHRI has given acknowledges the support that the MHRC has received from the Government of President Chakwera which includes a 41% increase in funding of the Commission; a commitment to strengthen the current legislation’s provisions for the immunity of members of the Commission, and no incident of the President abusing his powers to dismiss members of the Commission from office,” he said.

The CSOs further said that since the day President Chakwera won the elections on 27 June, 2020, he has thrived to maintain his promise of upholding the constitution.

Speaking during an MoU signing ceremony in Lilongwe on October 30, 2023, MUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Address Malata hailed the initiative, saying Samsung is a big global brand and any partnership with it brings many opportunities.

According to Professor Malata, the MoU would, among others, offer MUST an opportunity to expand access to tertiary education, especially for youths who are not formally selected for university education.

“As a university we believe we have an obligation to build human capital development for the youth in Malawi. We know not all of them can make it to university but where we have an opportunity to train them in any area of science, technology and innovation, we do that,” she said, adding already MUST runs projects such as the Girls Science Camp, Junior Engineer Academy and Community Innovator targeting secondary school students and community members, respectively.

And for the latter, Professor Malata said education levels count for nothing so long as the people have innovative ideas with potential to transform Malawi.

“In terms of computer and information technology, we are already doing great with our students winning regional awards for successive years. We also offer computer studies to all our first year students irrespective of their programme of study and some of the things they learn include coding and computer programming,” she said while assuring Samsung that MUST was a perfect partner for the SIC.

Apart from the youth, Professor Malata said the SIC programme will also help MUST staff to interact, learn and acquire modern technological knowledge and skills from experts at Samsung.

“The coming of this project will help youths to hone advanced technological skills that will support Malawi’s aspirations as outlined in Malawi 2063,” said Professor Malata.

In her remarks, Head of Transformation at Samsung (Africa) Lenhle Khoza, speaking on behalf of Vice President of Samsung Central Africa, Sung Wong Jung who had co-signed the MoU with Professor Malata, said the initiative will help to transform the economy of Malawi as more youths will be equipped with innovative skills.

“Samsung is committed to creating opportunities that will see the youth becoming innovative in Malawi and hence help in artificial intelligence programming,” Khoza said.

Samsung is a leading South Korean multinational electronics company headquartered in Yeongtong-gu and has been working with African Universities under the SIC in 2019.

“What lucks most in this industry is the support from the public. If Malawians support fully then this could be one of the ways that the country could get revenue.”

Affia called on government to give extra support towards Film Association of Malawi for it to grow bigger.

“Government is the mother body to all sectors. As one of the sectors, film association of Malawi needs support from the government in terms of funding and permit of some infrastructures which can help in making movies look good, we need the government to come in in building movie theaters so we do not need to spend so much money paying for venues as the industry is still in it’s baby steps.

He then urged people to come in large numbers to support the movie premiere.

“We brought 16 bars in 2017, people received it warmly, everybody watched it as it was all over the tv stations. We managed to bring an interesting piece of work in 2017 so trust me you will not regret going to the premiere for this one.
