By Chisomo Phiri

The World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control has hailed the Malawi Government for producing high quality tobacco.

This follows revelations that the leaf has been competitive on international markets in recent years.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale indicated that this means that tobacco produced in the country will now be classified as one of the best tobacco internationally to be processed for consumption.

Kawale further indicated that in the next Parliament meeting they will bring back the tobacco bill of 2019 for further amendments to be in line with international standards especially on child labor among others.

Hon Sam Kawale

The Minister disclosed that at least 239 million kilogrammes (kg) of tobacco have been licensed as of Friday last week which is roughly 60 million kg more, from 2022/23 buyers demand.

Kawale also indicated that so far 49,070 licenses have been issued to farmers who want to grow tobacco this season ,adding that Tobacco Commission (TC) has extended the tobacco registration and licencing period for the 2023/24 growing season to November 17 2023 from October 31 2023.

Said Kawale: ” Last year , President Lazarus Chakwera challenged us to be growing a minimum of 200 million kilogrammes every year, for the next five years, and on the first year we have already surpassed the target.”

Malawi is one of Africa’s largest tobacco leaf producers and in 2015, produced 22.6% of all of Africa’s output of tobacco leaf.

The country is one of the world’s largest producers of burley tobacco.

In 2018, 95,356 tonnes of tobacco were harvested in Malawi.

By Chisomo Phiri

The Director of ‘Is The President Dead?’ movie Issac Misoya says they are now done with the movie’s production and set for the premiere.

Misoya told us in an interview that the first premiere of the movie is on December 1,2023 at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in the capital Lilongwe.

He said Blantyre will follow on 8th the same month and then in other districts including Kasungu, Mzuzu and Zomba.

“I am delighted to announce that following the completion of our movie, “IS THE PRESIDENT DEAD,” which is set to premiere in December, we have even more exciting news.

“We will be holding auditions in January for two upcoming films. One will be filmed in Tanzania-Malawi, and the other in Malawi. One of the movie titles is “M’BONA.”

“While we originally planned to hold auditions in December, the project’s timeline adjustments have led to a rescheduled program. We look forward to seeing you in January for auditions in Lilongwe,” said Misoya.

Is The President Dead Movie Tackles Prevailing Governance Issues

It is probably one of the best movies to have ever been produced in Malawi since the local film industry (Mollywood) rose from its deathbed.

In other words, it is an award-winning movie of the year 2023 if its quality production and relevance is anything to go by.

Right from the choice of the cast to the theme, Is the President Dead movie features Malawi’s creams of acting and mirrors one of the serious governance issues (corruption) which is currently affecting the country.

Edwin Chonde, Hope Bemberezi Chisanu, Joyce Chavula-Mhango, Flora Suya, Sammy Katengeza, Valentino Molosen McPherson Chatama and Kelvin Ngoma are some of the cast of the prestigious movie.

It is an open secret that Malawi is grappling with the effects of corruption, one of the major threats to good political governance. And ‘Is The President Dead’ movie centers around the malpractice to expose its grave impact on overall governance.

Ironically, the title of the movie speaks the volumes by posing a big question whether the captain of the sinking ship is dead or alive to be in charge.

Malawi Leader President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Wednesday, 8th November, 2023 leaves for Saudi Arabia for official engagements.

On top of that, the president will meet His Excellency Sultan Al Marshad, Chief Executive Officer of the Saudi Fund for Development and sign the Makanjira road project deal meaning that the long awaited Mangochi-Makanjira road project has been made possible.

The long awaited Mangochi-Makanjira road has been a challenge for Malawian citizens living within Mangochi and those plying their businesses in the area.

Saudi Arabia ready to fund Makanjira Road

In his speech, during one of his recent engagements in Mangochi, President Chakwera told the people of Mangochi that he has secured funds from Saudi Arabia government through Saudi Fund to be used to construct the road segment between Mangochi and Makanjira.

Addressing the press in the morning today Minister of Information Moses Kunkuyu said Chakwera will also attend Arab Africa Summit.

He acts like Paul but behaves as Saul: The tale of Norman Chisale

By Linda Kwanjana

To think that during his time as Malawi’s State President, Peter Mutharika was surrounded by dishonest and vengeful people who don’t forgive gives me the impression that we were lost as a country.

The trending story which has dominated conversations on Tuesday 7th November is that of Norman Chisale, former security aide of President Mutharika.

Appearing on Zodiac television’s Exclusive Interview, Chisale did not only lie and swear a number of times while holding the bible, he also made some dangerous utterances that gave the impression that given the chance he can end someone’s life without any remorse.

Norman Chisale

At the back of so many criminal offenses he is being accused of, Chisale made little efforts to dismiss those rumours, instead he was adamant that he did not commit any of the crimes. He, however, made some careless self incriminating statements which do not rule out that he was the masterminder of the crimes in question.

Those who know the post State House Chisale, would mistake him with the latter- day Paul for walking around with a Bible yet his deeds are that of Saul.

In any case, Chisale is conflictual. Why would a man believed to be a devout christian say that he doesnt forgive those who hurt him? Which God does he worship?

He explicitly said himself that he will never forgive Steve Kayuni [former Director of Public Prosecution] for denying him an opportunity to draw some money from his frozen bank account meant for his children’s school fees. He alleged that after sometime, Kayuni asked for Chisale’s forgiveness but swearing on his Bible that he will never forgive him.

He said: “I swear in the name of this bible that I will never forgive you. I repeat, I will never forgive you. I ask you ,don’t try to contact me ever again.”

Chisale went on threatening the police officers who handled his strings of arrests for allegedly persecuting him for political reasons. He said the police officers who victimised him will pay dearly some day for what they did.

The most disturbing of all is that Chisale had the courage to lie on camera while holding the Bible. When he was asked about his age, he said he is 42. A thing which has caused an uproar on social media. Of course, this is too good to be true. Chisale is too old for that age. No wonder, some people had to fish out his passport which shows that he was born in 1975 which means he is 48 years old not 42. Again, this sounds untrue and some people are alleging that his real age is 53 which sounds closer to his real age.

Chisale has revealed his true nature. He is vengeful, resentful and dishonest he is not the transformed Saul, he is still Saul, not Paul.

President Lazarus Chakwera is on Wednesday, 8th November, 2023 expected to fly out to Saudi Arabia for official engagements, among which he will officially sign for the development funds for construction of a long awaited Mangochi-Makanjira road, according to the sources we have.

The long awaited Mangochi-Makanjira road has been a challenge for Malawian citizens living within Mangochi and those plying their businesses in the area.

President Chakwera

In his speech during one of his recent engagements in Mangochi, President Chakwera told the people of Mangochi that he has secured funds from Saudi Arabia government through Saudi Fund to be used to construct the road segment between Mangochi and Makanjira.

“Talking about the Makanjira road, we have secured funds to have the road started, that is the reason why government has already started constructing bridges across some rivers here.

I said, I will not speak anything of this road before I have something in my hands for you people of Mangochi. We have been invited to sign the agreement with Saudi Fund for the money they will pump in the project to get started” Said President Chakwera.

Once the road is constructed, it will help to grow the socioeconomic activities for the people of Mangochi and surrounding areas.
