Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has described the late Raphael Kasambara as a person who was a mentor and patriot to many people in the country.

Hara was speaking this when the body of late Kasambara was arriving at Mzuzu Airport on Sunday

“Malawi has lost a powerful man who loved his country very much, he was well educated and he should have opted to stay abroad but he decided to come back home to help to develop his country.

“He was a man who willingly taught many people about laws, and we can’t talk about lawyers without mentioning his name.

“He was a giant in the legal fraternity, and we are here to mourn one of Malawi’s great sons,” she said.

Kasambara died on Friday in Lilongwe.

Before departing for Mzuzu, there was a memorial service at St. Montfort Catholic Church in Blantyre.

The late Kasambara once served as the country’s Justice Minister and the Attorney General before his arrest in 2013 for his involvement in the shooting of former budget director Paul Mphwiyo during Joyce Banda’s administration.

Mphwiyo survived the shooting.

In 2016, Kasambara was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment on the count of conspiracy to murder Mphwiyo while his accomplices, Pika Manondo and former Malawi Defence Force soldier Macdonald Kumwembe were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment with hard labor.

But he was released on bail some years back.

His remains will be laid to rest today at his home village in Nkhata Bay District.

Health workers in the country say they will proceed with their sit-in  aimed at forcing the government to raise their special allowances.

According to David Chomba, President of the Physician Assistants Union of Malawi(PAUM) , the government has been non-committal to their demands, hence the sit-in.

Chomba has further accused the Ministry of Finance of frustrating the implementation of the allowances, despite the Ministry of Health finalizing the necessary paperwork.

He says if the government keeps on not  addressing their concerns, the health workers will continue with the industrial action, which will be done in phases.

Chomba says in the first phase, health workers will only attend to emergency cases; thereafter, it shall be a total shutdown.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance have not yet commented on the matter.

National Coordinator for Tuberculosis and Leprosy Elimination program in the Ministry of health Dr James Mpunga has denied the allegations from several sectors that he has intentions to venture into active politics.

Mpinga has reiterated that he will consider those intentions of joining active politics  when time comes but at the moment, his intentions are pure  and he contributes back to the people of Zomba as a bonafide citizen of the area.

Mpunga – I give back to my people

He said :” As a citizen of Zomba, it will always be my dream to make sure that I contribute back to the community that also brought me  up, I have done all my education in Zomba, I grew up there, therefore it’s important that I also give back. I started the sports bonanza  to make sure that we identify talent in Zomba that also can be taken to the national team and other places.

“So the introduction of those bonanza’s is just to make sure that people have got something to do as well for us to identify talent that can be taken elsewhere.”

Mpunga introduced K3 million James Mpunga Zampira Bonanza.

He said the grand finale of the bonanza will be on 16th June 2024 and it will be spiced up with musical performances and they will invite one of the celebrated people in Malawi football.

Flames players receive their game bonus

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) on Thursday paid the Flames players their game bonus immediately after their 3-1 win over Sao Tome and Principle in a World Cup qualifier.

This is the first time ever that players have received their bonus on the same day of the match.

The players are entitled to a K500,000 bonus for a win but FAM added K250,000 on top making it K750,000 which was paid to the players before their departure to Malabo for tomorrow’s encounter against Equatorial Guinea.

Flames

“I have been part of the Flames set up since 2011 and never have we been paid our game bonus on the same day. This is historic and very commendable.

“It just shows the new leadership has the welfare of the players at heart. FAM has done its part and has shown its commitment to improve our welfare and its now our turn to deliver on Monday,” said Flames captain John Banda.

Financial rewards in the form of bonuses paid to football players are considered compensation for past struggles and private investments made into players’ futures, some analysts suggest.

However, the payment of bonuses has become a thorny issue in Africa.

Bonuses are frequently awarded for: match appearances, cup round progression, win-bonuses, and also at the end of the season contingent on promotion, league table placing, cup success, or league survival.
